Manchester United were knocked off by Portsmouth in Premier League

United defender John O'Shea scored in the 90th minute and teammate Alan Smith nearly added another in injury time but Portsmouth goalkeeper David James made the tough save.

Matthew Taylor gave Portsmouth the lead in the 30th by knocking in a rebound, and United defender Rio Ferdinand made it 2-0 with an own-goal in the 89th.

United took the lead after Mark Clattenburg had adjudged Steed Malbranque to have tripped Ronaldo in the penalty area. It was a poor decision from the referee as there was no contact between the two players whilst there was more than a suspicion that the penalty was awarded after the referee had failed to give an earlier appeal which was a stonewall spot kick.
